vocabulary for chapter 1

Synagogue: a Jewish house of worship, often having facilities for religious instructions. The synagogue that the young boy attend meant a lot to his family.
Timidly: lacking self-assurance, courage, or bravery; easily alarmed; shy. The shy girl didn’t like talking in class.
Waiflike:
Cabbala: any occult or secret doctrine or science.
Encumbered: to burden or weigh down. She was encumbered with a suitcase and several packages.
Indulgently: characterized by or showing indulgence; benignly lenient or permissive. An indulgent parent lets her kids do what ever they please.
Revelations: the act of revealing or disclosing; disclosure. The revelations of my father made us all fear for our lives.
Mysticism: the beliefs, ideas, or mode thought of mystics.
Sighet:
Lorries: a long, low, horse-drawn wagon without sides. The lorries the Hungarian police had were to take us and move us around.
Betrothals: the act or state of being betrothed; engagement.
Emigration: an act or instance of emigrating. The emigration Jews from there home to ghettos shows how the German started taking control.
Billeted: job, position, appointment. The billeted to take the Jews out were to the Hungarian police.
Fascists: a member of a fascists movement or party. The fascists were the people the Jews were scared of.
Firmament: the vault of heaven; sky. The firmament was pleasant to look in the morning.
Premonition: a feeling of anticipation of or anxiety over a future event. One night I had a premonition that I was going to have a interesting and successful life.
Avid: keenly desirous; eager; greedy
Melancholy: a gloomy state of mind.
